Kayakers rescued from NH lake during storm

By George Sayour, About.com Guide

As expected, paddlers couldn’t resist kayaking in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene. After all, hurricanes do raise rivers and lakes and offer some spectacular natural effects even after the storm has passed. Lucky for these two kayakers on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire that rescuers could get to them in time.

Newport Beach Kayak and Paddleboard Thief Caught

By George Sayour, About.com Guide August 16, 2011

Kayak, canoe, and paddleboard theft is not a common occurance. The unspoken code among paddlers and the specialized nature of paddling gear usually make them immune from theft. After all, a stolen kayak is likely to be seen by its original owner at some point as the thief paddles it around.

That apparently didn’t prevent a thief in the idyllic community of Newport Beach from targetting kayakers and paddleboarders of this California paddling destination. Known for its expensive real estate, this area of Orange County is not typically associated with crime. Tell that, however, to the paddlers who have had their kayaks and paddleboards stolen over the last couple of months.

Well, I’m happy to report that the Newport Beach police have arrested the man they believe to be responsible. He was in possession of a number of the reported missing paddleboards and kayaks. Police say he was selling them on Craigslist.

While this is undoubtedly good news for paddlers, some might not be so happy.

The good news is that if you’re missing a paddle board or kayak you can contact the Newport Beach police to see if they have it in their possession. The bad news is if you have recently purchased one of these items through Craigslist, you may now be in possession of stolen property.

Tarpon 120 by Wilderness Systems

After searching high and low for a decent fishing kayak, I decided on the Tarpon 120. I am 5’8″ and weigh 170, this kayak is great, super quiet, plenty of storage, and a practical layout… Pros for the Tarpon: Tracts good for the size, maneuverable, Layout, craftsmanship, 3 phase seat, carrying handles, scupper holes have channels…
Rating: 9 of 10 by Florida salt.

I had been looking at purchasing a kayak for about a month. I am 5’11″ and 200 lbs. I demo’ed the new 2009 Tarpon Sit-on-top and all I can say is “WOW”! The new updated hatches are great and the new seat is really comfy. And the SlideTrax system…. I loved it! The Tarpon has a very dry ride (nice raise to the seat for that), good speed, and is very stable. Mine is outfitted with a fishing package so I can use it for fishing when I want. If you are looking for a new kayak definitely checkout the new Tarpon 120 by Wilderness Systems!
